CHUD

A1 – My Sign

CHUD banner: the name CHUD beside a sewer-city crest

This is the shop banner for my hero, CHUD – a 700 × 150 sign that advertises the shop with the hero's name and a crest for the hometown, the underground sewer-city. Every letter and every piece of the crest is drawn from scratch using only OpenGL triangle primitives and hand-placed vertices – no predefined fonts are used anywhere.

Implementation highlights:

  • All three triangle primitives appear on one banner: the straight strokes of H and D's stem use GL_TRIANGLES; the curves of C, U, and D's bowl are GL_TRIANGLE_STRIPs (annular arcs and a "thick polyline" for U); and the shield, manhole cover, and glowing eyes on the crest are GL_TRIANGLE_FANs.
  • More than one color: the letters glow toxic green and lit-window amber, and the crest adds brushed and shadowed steel over a pit-black manhole.
  • Each letter is authored once in its own local coordinate space, then placed on the banner with a model matrix built from glm::translate(), glm::scale(), and glm::rotate(): C is translated, H is translated and scaled 12% taller, U is translated and rotated, and D is translated, scaled, and rotated about its center.
  • Each glyph has its own drawLetterX() routine, a first step toward the object-oriented model hierarchy we build later in the course.
