What is U-CLIMB?
U-CLIMB is an acronym that stands for Undergraduate Computing Leaders Invested in Mentoring Beginners.
This program hires undergraduates who have recently completed the CSCI 101 course to guide current students
through the course and foster a welcoming enviroment for students to explore CS@Mines.
What do U-CLIMB mentors do?
U-CLIMB mentors not only do the work of a typical TA, such as grading and holding office hours,
but also take on a more involved mentoring role. By meeting with students individually and hosting
active learning sessions, U-CLIMB mentors help build a community within CS@Mines and cultivate the success
of CS students.
How do I get to work with a U-CLIMB mentor?
By taking the courses CSCI 101 and CSCI 102 you will be paired with one of our mentors (required for 1st and 2nd year
students; optional for 3rd and 4th year students). We will invite you to choose your own mentor early in the semester; we will
then match students as best we can!
Where and when do U-CLIMB mentors engage with protégés?
U-CLIMB mentors can be found during their office hours
(click
here for hours),
active learning sessions (four/semester), periodically in the 101/102 classrooms, and scheduled mentoring visits.
Where do I go for my scheduled mentoring visit?
Location for a mentoring session will be determined by the mentor.
How can I find or contact a mentor?
Mentors are available during office hours and their emails can be found
here.
Why join the U-CLIMB team?
Becoming a U-CLIMB mentor is a great opportunity to become more involved in the CS@Mines department, build
relationships with professors and fellow CS majors, and gain work experience.
Do I need to be a CS major to become a U-CLIMB mentor?
To provide the best possible support for incoming students, U-CLIMB mentors are CS majors
who have good experience with the subject (from involvment in CS@Mines and knowledge gathered from CS courses).
