Unit 7 - Design System
Purpose
Think about the look-and-feel of your product, and understand
the purpose of a design system.
Preparation
Read:
- LeanUX chapter 4, Design Systems (pages 58-68)
Design System
A Design System prescribes
major elements of your look-and-feel. Creating an entire design system
(including coded examples) is beyond our scope. Instead, we will create a minimal
style guideline, as follows:
- Each student should come up with a few guidelines (probably 5-10).
- These guidelines should cover items like color (be specific!), font, logo,
header and footer, SPA vs multiple pages, special widgets,
menu structure (top/side/hamburger), haptics and/or sound, etc.
- You may want to do the
Apple HIG unit first,
to see some professional guidelines.
- As a team, discuss the lists and agree on which you want to use.
If two people had competing suggestions (e.g., for color), the team
should decide. The team may respectfully reject or modify ideas. The
combined list will likely be longer than any individual list.
NOTE: if tools for front-end development are your passion, you
may want to google topics like Web Components and Polymer (and compare
both to React or just Bootstrap). These are worthy topics, but alas
beyond our scope.
Submit
Zip the individual and team pdfs and submit.
Evaluation
There is no right answer. Your work will be assessed based on
whether your list is thoughtful and reasonably comprehensive.
