Unit 4 - Design Studio B
Purpose:
Practice the final steps of a collaborative design process.
Preparation:
Read:
- LeanUX chapter 4, pages 47-57 (beginning of chapter through Design Systems)
Process
Our process is described below. Be sure to coordinate with your teammates to ensure the
individual work (step 2) is done before the team work (steps 3-4).
Design Studio
In Design Studio A, your team identified
product features.
Our next step is to design page(s) to implement the most important features. We will follow the
Design Studio approach (pages 52-57), modified for social distancing:
- Problem definition. You have already done the feature brainstorm
as a team, so you can skip this step.
- Individual idea generation. Each person will draw at least 4 low-fidelity
sketches (more if you have other ideas you really want to explore).
- The original plan was for you to be in the same room and just draw
your ideas.
- You may still want to draw you ideas using pen and paper, then
take a picture and convert to image file. Be sure design is
legible (e.g., use a heavy marker, draw clear block
letters, etc.).
- You may prefer to use a tool like paint or powerpoint. These
should still be just rough sketches. Note that we'll be doing
digital prototypes in the next lab.
- You will share your sketches with your teammates and also submit to me.
- Presentation and critique. Be sure to read the book's suggestions
(page 55) for how to give good feedback!! This is a skill that will serve you well
no matter what career path you take! This step should be done as a
remote meeting.
- Team idea generation. Pick the 3-4 screens that have the most
consensus. Work as a team to make the ideas more specific. Note that this step
could be done as a remote meeting, OR it might be done by each member
in turn reviewing/modifying the design. This may vary by team.
Submit
Create a zip that includes:
- Design sketches from each student (include your name on the design)
- Pictures of the screens the team will implement.
Evaluation
As with Design Studio A, I will not critique your design, but will
grade based on effort (plus following the steps).
Separate grades will be recorded for a) designs by each team member,
and b) designs created by the team.
