CSCI 101 U-CLIMB Mentors

The U-CLIMB (Undergraduate Computing Leaders Invested in Mentoring Beginners) program in CS@Mines was specifically developed for CSCI 101. U-CLIMB is a near-peer mentoring program that trains selected students who have recently mastered CSCI 101 to mentor students currently enrolled in CSCI 101 (and CSCI 102). Learn more about this valuable CSCI 101 resource here: U-CLIMB.
Check out the bios of the U-CLIMB mentors here: Mentors.

Institutional Support

  • In addition to the instructors and tutors listed, all students are encouraged to seek academic support from the Center for Academic Services & Advising (CASA). Here you will find information about advising, tutoring, academic enrichment workshops, etc. Please take advantage of this valuable resource!
  • Additionally, students who qualify for disability accommodations must contact Disability Support Services (DSS) and request a confidential letter be sent to your instructor to ensure proper accommodations are provided. Accommodations cannot be provided without this letter.

Meet the 101 Instructors

Quote Kenzie lives by: "The energy you emit is the energy you will receive. Stay positive and good things will happen."

Hi everyone, I am Kenzie Hull! I completed my bachelor's degree in CS last semester at Mines, and will complete my master's degree in CS this semester. I have always had a passion for tutoring and am very excited to take on this teaching role this semester. In my free time I love to play sports/weightlift, be active, and of course spend time with family and friends. I am excited to work with you all and I wish you the best of luck! :)

Rob Thompson

Quote Rob lives by: "Results are a byproduct of the time and attention you put in. Learning to enjoy the process rather than focusing on the results will help you have a much better time."

Hi all, I'm Rob Thompson. I finished my PhD in CS in 2019 at UW Seattle and I'm joining Mines this year to start my second year of teaching. My research focus was on computer science education, so I'm excited to help you all transition into (or at least get a taste of) computer science! In my free time I like to cook, play video games, and get outside. I'm new to Denver, so if you have suggestions of what to see or eat let me know!

Quote Armando lives by: "Tell me your habits and I'll tell you your future."

Hi! My name is Armando Ocampo and I am currently pursuing my M.S. in computer science. Some of my outside interests include playing soccer, dancing, wrestling, and spending time with my friends/family. I have always enjoyed teaching, and I am looking forward to conveying both my knowledge and excitement about CS!

Carter Fowler

Quote Carter lives by: "You know what the happiest animal on earth is? It’s a gold fish. Know why? It’s got a 10 second memory. Be a goldfish." - Ted Lasso

Hello, my name is Carter Fowler and I am pursuing my Master's in Computer Science with a research focus in CS Education. I finished my BS in Computer Science in May 2021, and I'm really excited to help teach this course!! Outside of the classroom I enjoy theatre, D&D, movies, making resin dice, and just about any project I can get my hands on!

Quote Megan lives by: "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."
- Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss)

Hello, my name is Megan Shapiro! I finished my ME Bachelor's degree, with CS and EE minors, in 2019 and my Robotics Master's degree in 2020. I've lived in CO for 12 years, 7 of which have been here in Golden. I love coding and teaching, so I can't wait to get started with you in CS101! Outside of class, I enjoy scifi, needlework, puzzles, and musical theatre.

Alex Cieslewicz

Quote Alex lives by: "Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something"

Hello all! My name is Alex Cieslewicz. I graduated from Mines Spring of 2020 with a BS in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Computer Science. Currently I am working towards my Masters degree in Computer Science. Outside of class I enjoy playing video games, piano, and running. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you this semester!
