CSCI 422: User Interface Design
Presentations
Schedule
SchedulePurpose
The goal for these presentations is to increase our awareness of ideas, tools, techniques related to human-computer interaction. Students will prepare presentations based on articles from the Interactions magazine, one of the HCI-related books I own (including Game Design), or by finding topics on the web. Topics from the web must be approved.
NOTE: Your presentation should include information from one or more sources; it is not intended for you to just share your opinion.
Possible themes for the talk include:
- Social networking.
- Mobile applications
- Special populations - seniors, children, disabilities, etc. Example: EyeWriter
- New interfaces
In case you need some ideas, here are the schedules from some of the previous semesters.
Details
- 20 minutes in length, not including questions. This will be about 20 slides, or maybe 15 slides if you include a video.
- Done with a partner
- Should be a formal presentation, probably created in PowerPoint (or OO equivalent).
- May include material obtained from sources such as the web (with acknowledgements, of course). Pictures, short video clips, short demonstrations are all acceptable.
- Sufficient length - 5 points (-1 point for each minute < 20)
- Sufficient detail, based on research not opinions or marketing "fluff" - 5 points
- Quality of presentation (speaking style, etc.) - 5 points
- Quality of material (clarity, spelling, include sufficient images, etc.) - 5 points
- Total: 20 points
Additional Info:
- Past presentations have been very informative and interesting. If you've picked a topic and find you're having trouble figuring out how to make an interesting presentation, pick another topic!
- Students will be asked to provide feedback on the presentations. Questions will vary based on the topic. Be sure to bring paper and pen to class on presentation days.
- Both students within a pair will typically receive the same grade, but not always (e.g., one student's speaking style may be better than the others).

Review the possible presentation dates on the schedule. Send an email with your top 2 choices of dates and, if applicable, the course topic (where possible I would like to have related topics on the same day). At least two weeks prior to your presentation, email your topic to be added to the schedule.
