CSCI 499 - Onboarding

Purpose

A lot of attention has been given to the process of obtaining customers and converting them to loyal, paying fans (e.g., review LeanUX figure 3-6, the startup funnel). The purpose of user "onboarding" is to teach users how to use your app... a critical component of the transition to full-time user and fan. In this unit we look at different UI/UX patterns for onboarding.

Exercise

For each pattern, think about your product and indicate either a) how you think that technique might work OR b) why that technique would not be the best. Feel free to make assumptions about the ultimate design of your product (e.g., assume that there will be a set of steps where the user sets goals and tracks progress). Use your imagination - the point of this is to think about various ways to engage users, NOT to be constrained by your current product design.
